Position: Senior Systems Engineer (VMware)
Location: Washington, DC

Clearance: Top Secret

Responsibilities
- Design, architect, configure, deploy, upgrade and support VMware on various hardware platforms
- Configure and deploy various server platforms
- Diagnose and troubleshoot VMware and other related technologies
- Adhere to engineering and architecture standards and participate in technical review meetings as required
- Participate in the evaluation, deployment and management of new technologies in alignment with other engineers and architects
- Incident support and participation in on-call rotation during off hours and weekends
- Create and maintain documentation: logical/physical diagrams, run books and other technical engineering documents
- Consistently demonstrate initiative and commitment to optimizing systems and processes
- Oversees the Installation of new server hardware and software according to standard operating procedures
- Oversees the updates to hardware, operating systems, and software as needed to provide required functionality and security
- Ensures systems are monitored and statistics relevant to capacity, performance, utilization, etc. are collected and regularly reviewed
- Keeps abreast of current developments in server/VI technology to assist Federal staff in assessing the future direction of server technology
Required
- BS and 8+ year related experience; or equivalent combination
- Hands on engineering experience with VMware (to include ESX, ESXi/vSphere, vCenter, vMotion, and/or DRS) and other virtualization technologies and concepts
- Experience designing, installing and supporting server solutions and devices: physical and/or virtual
- Experience with capacity planning and sizing VMware environments
- Experience in performance tuning and optimizing computing platforms
- Experience with data center migrations - moving VM workloads
- Expert experience configuring and deploying various server platforms (such as Cisco UCS, HP, Dell, etc.)
- Strong experience with design, development, implementation, and maintenance of large-scale systems, preferably across multiple hardware and software platforms
- Strong understanding of high availability concepts with practical experience and implementation of key components (databases, application servers, fault tolerant systems, cluster server/software, etc.)
- Strong understanding of fundamental hardware concepts: disk, memory, CPU, NIC, HBA, firmware, RAID, performance concepts (I/O, paging, swapping, system calls), iSCSI, Fiber Channel, Ethernet, firmware
- Strong understanding of essential TCP/IP protocols: such as TCP, UDP, ICMP, SMTP, SNMP, LDAP, DNS, NTP, and understanding of wider set protocols
- Understanding of Security best practices as related to infrastructure and application architectures
- Strong written and oral communications
