Senior Linux Systems Engineer

Position: Senior Systems Engineer (Linux) 
Location: Washington, DC
Client: Department of Homeland Security
Clearance: Top Secret
Key Technologies: RedHat/CentOS, Oracle Database Appliances, ArcSight

Responsibilities

  • Design, architect, configure, deploy, upgrade and support Linux OS on various hardware platforms 
  • Configure and deploy various server platforms 
  • Diagnose and troubleshoot Linux OS and other related technologies 
  • Adhere to engineering and architecture standards and participate in technical review meetings as required 
  • Participate in the evaluation, deployment and management of new technologies in alignment with other engineers and architects 
  • Incident support and participation in on-call rotation during off hours and weekends 
  • Create and maintain documentation: logical/physical diagrams, run books and other technical engineering documents 
  • Consistently demonstrate initiative and commitment to optimizing systems and processes 
  • Oversees the Installation of new server hardware and software according to standard operating procedures 
  • Oversees the updates to hardware, operating systems, and software as needed to provide required functionality and security 
  • Ensures systems are monitored and statistics relevant to capacity, performance, utilization, etc. are collected and regularly reviewed 
  • Keeps abreast of current developments in RHEL/CentOS, virtualization and server technology to assist Federal staff in assessing the future direction of environment

Required

  • BS and 8+ year related experience; or equivalent combination 
  • Hands on engineering experience with RHEL/CentOS, package and patch management and distribution, security hardening procedures, server and virtualization technologies and concepts 
  • Experience designing, installing and supporting server solutions and devices: physical and/or virtual 
  • Experience with capacity planning and sizing Linux environments 
  • Experience in performance tuning and optimizing computing platforms 
  • Experience with data center migrations - moving workloads 
  • Expert experience configuring and deploying various server platforms (such as Oracle Database Appliances, Cisco UCS, HP, Dell, etc.) 
  • Strong experience with design, development, implementation, and maintenance of large-scale systems, preferably across multiple hardware and software platforms 
  • Strong understanding of high availability concepts with practical experience and implementation of key components (databases, application servers, fault tolerant systems, cluster server/software, etc.) 
  • Strong understanding of fundamental hardware concepts: disk, memory, CPU, NIC, HBA, firmware, RAID, performance concepts (I/O, paging, swapping, system calls), iSCSI, Fiber Channel, Ethernet, firmware 
  • Strong understanding of essential TCP/IP protocols: such as TCP, UDP, ICMP, SMTP, SNMP, LDAP, DNS, NTP, and understanding of wider set protocols 
  • Understanding of Security best practices as related to infrastructure and application architectures 
  • Strong written and oral communications

  • Python, Perl or other scripting experience
  • ITIL Foundations certification
